Week 1- Exp 2 Axos
Stephen Hawkin axos-
"In sicence fiction, space and time warps are a common place. They are used for rapid journeys around the galaxy, or for travel through time. But todays science ficture, is often tomorrows science fact."
When looking as this quote I concentrated mainly on the first sentence. Giving me ideas of change and transformation. From one age to the next, from fantasy to reality.

Florence Nightingale Axos-
"It may seem a strange principle to enuciate as the very first requirement in a hospital that it should do the sick no harm"
I think this quote explores ideas of nurturing and care for another. Helping to grow and develop.
This makes me think of creating a space rather like a hospital, with one connecting overall room with individual cubicles or sections where one would feel sheltered and safe. A calming environment.

Stephen Kawkin-
'In science fiction space and time warps are a common place. They are used for rapid journeys around the galaxy, or for travel through time. But todays science ficition is often tomorrow's science fact'

Jane Goodall-
'Modern technologies are helping us search for the upper levels of cognitions in some of these non-human animals'
(TED- conference- 'What seperates us from the apes')

Final developed sketchup model.

Undulating- The above ground level represents the undulating aspect of many of Sidney Nolan's works. The materials used to make the upper level dome roofs is concrete, with a glass walls covering one side of each roof. The stairs leading down from these levels are wooded slated stairs with lead onto a pebbled ground surface. the ground level is a mixture of wood, concreted pebbles and heavy duty glass.
I have used differing levels on the ground plane as well as a continuing upstairs gallery and separate studio space which opens up to the ground level gallery space. And then connecting stairs going their respective way towards the studio/gallery above ground level.
I feel that this has successfully conveyed an 'undulating' space, combined with the textures used, uneven floor plan, and split level gallery and separate studio space. That is also practical for the artist to work in, with big open spaces, having natural light and ventilation.

This section shows the below ground space. This space represents the fluidity which many of Ricky Swallows works convey.
I have used curved walls as well as separating translucent portions in the centre. The effect of this is for when you descend down the stairs into the gallery, you are slowly introduced into the gallery. The translucent glass opens up and opposite ends where you are then lead around the sweeping walls of the gallery with the artist's work hanging from the roof of the gallery.
(because of the colouring it is difficult to see the artist's work from this picture).
The walls are created using concrete, that has been modeled into shape, with a glass centre.
Final developed sketchup model and textures

This is the final product of my gallery/studio.
I have incorporated many of my textures into the above and below ground gallery.

As you can see here I used the 'pebbled' texture for part of the covering for the ground floor. I think this texture was appropriate for the undulating feel, not being to rough below the foot but not altogether level ground either.
As well as 'abrasive' texture for the exterior wall.
The ground floor has has a translucent centre, which enables one to took down into the below ground level, as well as providing a natural light source within the below ground studio.

This section show the below ground studio.
I have used the 'soft' texture for the floor. Giving it a flowing filling along the surface.
This section also show the texture I have chosen to use on the tread of the stairs, 'smooth'.
Within the below ground level the artists work (Richy Swallow) are hanging from the ceiling towards the sides of the sweeping walls of the gallery. Giving the gallery fluidity between works.
Sidney Nolan- Landscape

In this painting Sidney Nolan is representing the landscape of the Australian outback.
He has used a range of varying colours that meld into each other, giving it a unique blended look. The sharp rich colours make for a realistic version of the harsh striking land.
On many of Sidney Nolan's painting he experiments with oil and pastels, this was my original thought for what was used to create this masterpiece. However on closer inspection one can see the risen bumps and 'rough' surface across the board, again enforcing the realism of the harsh and undulating environment. i discovered to create this effect Nolan has used ripolin on board.
Ricky Swallow- Tusk

This is the artists work that I got my inspiration from to create my work from the words pulled from this piece.
One of the words I choose for it and have stuck with for my below ground studio was fluid.
This sculpture on first view looks realistic enough to be made of real human bones, with the exactness of the shape and curves and intrinsic details used. However real bones are very brittle and would not have up stood to the molding of creation of this model. On closer inspection I found that Swallow has used aluminium rods to construct the sculpture, with bronze with white patina covering it. A patina is the outside colour of bronze.
What is patina?
It is the result of a chemical reaction with the copper in the bronze that literally changes the surface color of the bronze and it can be either natural, man-made or both. It is usually applied by the artist during the casting process.
To apply a patina an artist reheats the bronze sculpture using a roofer's torch. Chemicals are then applied with a brush or spray bottle. Once the desired colour is achieved the sculpture is rinsed with cold water to stop the chemical reaction. Once the desired colour is achieved two coats of wax are applied to the sculpture while it is still warm to seal the patina.
Using this method Swallow has been able to give a very realistic and lasting effect on the sculpture.

Undulating floor
I think this has a connection to my model because I think this is the feeling one might have when within the studio. With the curving walls and different angles above and below ground.
Developed Sketch up model
Sketchup modelled stairs

pebbled texture has been added to the tread of the stair and you can see the undulating texture on the floor of the ground level.
These stairs differ greatly from the previous stairs in the previous model. I wanted something that looked good as well as fit with the space I was creating for my studio.
I think these stairs provide a better entry into the upper studio.
